The Life Ball met with great international interest and public attention. In the foreground of the ball was not only the „party people“ or sensational live performances, but above all the fight against AIDS. Speeches by international star guests at the opening ceremony on Rathausplatz reminded of the serious background, who usually got involved in various aid and charity projects. Since the ball was founded, designers, actors, singers, politicians and models have taken part in the opening show to promote this special project.
The glamorous benefit event was recently known far beyond Austria’s borders. Every year, more than 70 TV stations and around 500 media representatives from Germany and abroad reported on the event. In the case of repeated accreditation, attention was paid to whether the topic of AIDS was also addressed in the reports or, for example, only about the celebrities. From 2007, ORF 1 reported live from the opening as part of a themed evening, followed by interviews with prominent guests, which was followed by around 400,000 viewers. Puls 4 brought live reports from the ball after the ORF broadcast in 2008. The new German television broadcaster TIMM broadcast over four hours of programming from the Life Ball in 2009, with some of the ORF’s signal being used. With the live broadcast of the Life Ball 2014 by ORF, there was a record audience with a peak of 662,000 viewers. More than 130,000 viewers worldwide followed the opening via live streaming on the Internet.
