Not only the return of film, but also the heart of the Locarno Film Festival – the Piazza Grande – will be celebrated this year. The open air venue opened 50 years ago. And it should become a place where the festival audience can exchange ideas about the urgent ecological problems and the values ​​of our society. Everything in the context of one of the most impressive Hotspots in southern Switzerland.


With its giant screen, one of the biggest in Europe, endowed with truly exceptional projection quality, the Piazza Grande is one of the finest open-air venues in the world. This magnificent and unique setting is where every night all the many and diverse festival audiences come together for a big cinematic event.

The world premiere of „Yaya e Lennie – The Walking Liberty“ should serve as inspiration. In the animated film, director Alessandro Rak tells of people moving in an apocalyptic future. Also known is the festival’s opening film, „Beckett“ by Ferdinando Cito Filomarino.

Or that the French actress Laetitia Casta personally receives her Excellence Award Davide Campari 2021 on the same day and the American director, screenwriter and actor John Landis picks up the Pardo d’onore on August 13th.
